Attracting investment in the agri-food sector: opportunities and challenges

On 27 November 2024, Grosseto will be at the centre of an important meeting dedicated to the potential and challenges of the agrifood sector in the Tuscan Maremma. The event, entitled ‘Attracting investments in the agri-food sector: opportunities and challenges’, will be held at the Sala Eden on the Grosseto Walls from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will be attended by leading figures from the national and regional scene, as well as representatives from the Municipality of Grosseto and the academic world.
Organised by the Municipality of Grosseto in collaboration with Promo P.A. Fondazione as part of the InvestinGrosseto initiative, the meeting aims to strengthen the attractiveness of the area and encourage investment in the local agrifood chain. The InvestinGrosseto project, which already has a dedicated portal (www.investingrosseto.it), is an important showcase for the area’s agricultural and agrifood excellence, providing an overview of resources and opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors interested in Maremma.

Programme and Topics

The meeting will be divided into two main sessions. The first session will be dedicated to investment perspectives in the agri-food sector and will include interventions by prominent speakers such as:

  • Roberto Milletti*, Head of the MASAF Technical Secretariat,
  • Massimo Calzoni, Head of Service Promotion and Accompaniment of Invitalia,
  • Filippo Giabbani, Head of International Activities and Investment Attraction of Invest in Tuscany.

In the second part of the event, the focus will be on the opportunities offered by organic and conventional agriculture, as well as on the strategies of the new Structural Plan of the Municipality of Grosseto to foster rural entrepreneurship. Participants will include:

  • Antonfrancesco Vivarelli Colonna, Mayor of Grosseto and President of the Maremma Toscana Organic District
  • Prof. Marcello Mele and Prof. Daniele Antichi of the University of Pisa
  • representatives of the municipal administration, such as Vice Mayor Bruno Ceccherini, Marco De Bianchi and Michele Angeli.

The Tuscan Maremma Biological District, which brings together seven municipalities (Grosseto, Capalbio, Castiglione della Pescaia, Magliano in Toscana, Manciano, Orbetello, Scansano) and numerous farms, will play a central role in promoting organic and natural production as pillars of economic development and territorial enhancement.

An Opportunity for All

The event will conclude with speeches by the main trade associations, which will offer their views on the future of the Maremma agrifood sector.
The meeting is free and open to all, subject to registration. For more information and to register, please visit the dedicated link here or write to b.pandolfi@promopa.it. Download the detailed programme.

A city accessible to large urban areas

The city of Grosseto lies on the Rome-Livorno road axis and is connected to the large urban areas of Siena and Florence via the E78.

With regard to the Rome-Livorno axis (the so-called Tirrenica), the Italian government has announced that in 2025 work will begin on upgrading and securing one of the territory’s main road axes, with plans to upgrade, among other things, the Grosseto south-San Pietro in Palazzi section and the central section from Ansedonia to Grosseto.

As for the Siena-Grosseto link, work is under way to upgrade the E78 to four lanes .

The work specifically concerns a section of about 11.8 kilometers and affects the municipalities of Sovicille, Murlo and Monticiano.

The work, for a total investment of 195 million euros, consists of upgrading the SS223 “di Paganico” to four lanes by building a new carriageway alongside the existing one.

Grosseto also has a civil airport (Grosseto Airport-Seam Spa), which currently serves private flights, with a very strong charter traffic of about 1,500 charter flights a year for business and tourist visits.
