According to the Maremma and Tyrrhenian Chamber of Commerce’s report on the first half of 2023, in June the province of Grosseto had a percentage of employed people between 15 and 64 years of age at 40.6 percent of residents, placing it intermediate between Tuscany (42.5 percent) and Italy (38.6 percent). Considering also the employed between 64 and 89 years old, this percentage increases to 44.3 percent for Grosseto and Tuscany, while for Italy it is 39.8 percent. Interestingly, those employed at retirement age (65-89) account for a significant 8.4 percent in Grosseto, in contrast to 3.9 percent for Tuscany and 3.1 percent for the national average.
At the provincial level, there are more than 6,200 unemployed residents, corresponding to 2.9 percent of residents (2.6 percent in Tuscany, 3.4 percent in Italy). Together with the employed, they form the active population in the labor market, which reaches almost 100,000 and accounts for 43.5 percent of total residents (45.2 percent in Tuscany, 41.9 percent in Italy).
The inactive, those who are out of the labor market (not employed and not looking for work) between the ages of 15 and 64, amount to about 36,500, accounting for 16.9% of residents (16.5% in Tuscany, 21.2% in Italy). The percentage of unemployed thus appears to be in the minority compared to the larger number of inactive people of working age, mainly women.
